Fat Wood Byobu / 肥松の屏風 - 赤く光り出す屏風 -
ヤニ/樹脂を多く含んだ肥松を用いた屏風を制作した。屏風は平安時代より発展をとげてきた日本の伝統的な家具である。字のごとく風を遮り、視線を遮り、空間を仕切る間仕切の役割をもつ。肥松は樹齢数百年を超える樹脂を多く含んだ松から採取できる貴重な材である。長い年月をかけ蓄積された松の脂は、光を捉えると赤い色を放つ。この独特な色こそ肥松の樹脂の色である。この材と屏風を組合わせて、肥松の屏風をつくる。光を捉えて、肥松の屏風が赤く妖艶に光り出す。また、この屏風は、特殊なジョイントにより、様々な形へと変化することで、その機能が装飾的な壁や照明器具に変化する。樹脂が多く、使用方法やメンテナンスに困り、昔から毛嫌いされてきた松ヤニを様々な加工技術によって、美しい素材に変えて、先進的なデザインに昇華する。
We created a Byobu using fat wood, which is rich in resin. Byobu is a traditional Japanese furniture that has developed since the Heian period. As the name suggests, it blocks the wind, blocks views, and acts as a partition to divide space. The fat wood is a precious material that can be extracted from pines, which is rich in resin that are over hundreds of years old. The resin, which has accumulated over many years, changes a red color when it catches light, unlike the resin of other trees. This material is combined with Byobu to create Fat Wood Byobu. When the fat wood catches the light, Fat Wood Byobu shines a bewitching red. Furthermore, Fat Wood Byobu can be transformed into various shapes using special joints, changing its function into Art Wall piece or Lighting Fixture. The resin of pine, which has long been disliked because it is high in resin and difficult to use and maintain, has been transformed into a beautiful material through various processing techniques and changed it to an advanced design.

3つの機能 / 3 Functions
肥松の屏風は、3つの機能を有している。屏風板間をつなぐ接点に" 紐丁番 "という特殊なジョイントを用いることで、屏風が様々な形へと変化し、その機能も変化する。

1 . 間仕切・目隠し / Partition
古来からの屏風の機能である、風を遮り、視線を遮り、空間を仕切る間仕切の役割をもつ。
Partition fulfills the traditional functions of Byobu : blocking wind, blocking views, and acting as a partition to divide space.
2 . 装飾的な壁 / Art Wall
装飾的な壁は、照明器具と組み合せることで、屏風が赤く妖艶に光り出し、様々な空間に華を添える。
When combined with lighting fixture, Fat Wood Byobu shines a bewitching red, add elegance to a variety of spaces.
3 . 照明器具 / Lighting Fixture
屏風が形を変えて、照明器具に変化する。照明器具を囲むように三角柱の形に変化し、赤く妖艶に光り出す。
Byobu changes shape and transforms into a lighting fixture. It changes shape into a triangular prism surrounding the lighting fixture and glows a bewitching red.

屏風板間をつなぐ接点に" 紐丁番 "という特殊なジョイントを用いることで、屏風が様々な形へと変化する。
By using special joints called " string hinges " to connect the panels, Fat Wood Byobu can be transformed into various shapes.
360度回転可能な" 紐丁番 "によるジョイント / String Hinge Joint
紐丁番は、非常に高度な技術でつくられたジョイントである。通常の丁番は、片方向にしか折れない機構となっているが、この紐丁番は１本の紐を立体的に通したもので、表裏どちらにも折れるのが特徴である。これによって、各板が360度回転可能となり、自由に形体を変化できる。
String Hinge is a joint made using highly advanced techniques. The normal hinge is designed so that it can only fold in one direction, but String Hinge uses a single string passing through it in a three-dimensional manner, and it can fold in either direction. This allows each board to rotate 360 degrees and freely changes the shape.
木目の美しさ / The Beauty of Wood Grain
光を捉えた時に木の柾目か板目かでも模様が異なり、木目と樹脂の唯一無二の模様をつくる。
When Fat Wood Byobu catches light, the pattern changes depending on whether it is straight grain or cross grain, creating a unique pattern of wood grain and resin.

柾目 / Straight Grain
柾目は、木目に沿って樹脂が流れているような表情をつくる。
The straight grain gives the appearance of the resin flowing along with the wood grain.
板目 / Cross Grain
板目は、より荒々しく、木目と樹脂の複雑な模様をつくる。
The cross grain gives the rough and complex combination of wood grain and resin.
肥松の透過性 / Transparency of Fat Wood
肥松の屏風は、光を捉えると、赤く光り、透過性をもつ。
When Fat Wood Byobu catches light, it glows red and becomes transparent.
順光と逆光で見え方が反転 / Frontlighting & Backlighting
肥松の屏風は、光の受け方によって、見え方が反転する。順光では、力強い木目が浮び上がり、逆光では、木目と樹脂が同時に浮び上がり、唯一無二の美しい模様をつくる。
The appearance of Fat Wood Byobu is reversed depending on the direction of the light. In frontlighting, the grain of Fat Wood appears, and in Backlighting, the grain of Fat Wood and the resin appear at the same time, creating a unique and beautiful pattern.

経年変化の美しさ / The Beauty of Aging
経年変化により、樹脂が全体の木目に浸透していき、表層は美しい飴色へと変化することで、より深い赤で肥松が妖艶に光り出す。
As the resin ages, it permeates the entire grain of the wood, and the surface changes to a beautiful amber color, lighting up with a deeper red.
