Cherry Bark Lamp / 桜皮の照明　　　 　 　 　　　 - 樹皮の赤い灯り -

桜の皮を用いた照明を制作した。 桜の皮は、しなやかで弾力があり、湿気や乾燥に強く、日本の伝統工芸「 樺細工 」で使用されてきた。桜の皮を丁寧に乾燥させ、特殊な技術で薄く削り磨き上げることで、赤褐色の美しい色彩と光沢がうまれ、さらに光を捉えると、赤く光り出す。 この独特な色こそ桜皮の色素の色である。 この桜の皮を用いて、桜皮(オウヒ)の照明をつくる。 自然物である桜の皮は1つ1つ表情が異なり、削り方や磨き方で様々な表情に変化する。 さらに、光が加わることで、桜皮の色素が赤く光り出し、樹皮の美しい模様が浮び上がる。 また、桜皮の照明は、大きさや形が変化し、その機能も、ペンダントランプ、デスクランプ、フロアランプと変化する。 様々な空間で桜皮の照明が赤く妖艶に光り出す。 日本の伝統工芸である「 樺細工 」の技を活かして、桜の皮を美しい素材に変えて、先進的なデザインに昇華する。

We created a lamp using cherry bark. Cherry bark is flexible and elastic, resistant to both moisture and dryness, and has been used in the traditional Japanese craft of " Kabazaiku ". By drying the cherry bark and then using a special technique to thinly shave and polish it, a beautiful reddish-brown color and luster are created, and it glows red when it catches the light. This unique color is the color of the pigment in cherry bark. We created a Cherry Bark Lamp using this special tree bark. Each piece of natural cherry bark has a unique appearance, and its look can be transformed in various ways depending on how it is carved and polished. When light is captured, the pigment in the cherry bark glows bewitching red, revealing the beautiful patterns of the bark. Cherry Bark Lamp can be transformed into various shapes, and its function also changes. 1. Pendant lamp 2. Table Lamp 3. Floor Lamp In various spaces, Cherry Bark Lamp glows a bewitching red in the light. The resin of pine, which has long been disliked because it is high in resin and difficult to use and maintain, has been transformed into a beautiful material through various processing techniques and changed it to an advanced design. By utilizing the techniques of " Kabazaiku " a traditional Japanese craft, cherry bark has been transformed into a beautiful material and changed it to an advanced design.

桜の皮 / Cherry Bark

桜の皮は、しなやかで弾力があり、湿気や乾燥に強く、日本の伝統工芸「 樺細工 」で使用されてきた。濃い赤褐色で、横長の皮目(ヒモク)が特徴。自然という厳しい環境下で、木の内部を保護し、物質循環を行うために、剥離しやすい性質をもつ。

Cherry bark is flexible and elastic, resistant to both moisture and dryness, and has been used in the traditional Japanese craft of " Kabazaiku ". This bark is a deep reddish-brown color and is characterized by its elongated lenticels. In harsh natural environments, cherry bark has a tendency to peel off easily in order to protect the inside of the tree and facilitate the circulation of nutrients.

樺細工 / Cherry Bark Craft

樺細工は、桜の樹皮を用いた日本の伝統工芸である。樺とは、野生の山桜の樹皮のこと。山々に囲まれた秋田県角館で育まれ、江戸時代からその技術が継承されてきた。主に茶筒や小物等に使われている。かの近代民芸運動の先駆者である柳宗悦も「日本の樹である桜が皮として使われる日本固有のものである。」と評し、以下のような魅力を説いている。
1.渋い赤褐色の美しい色彩
2.漆のように光る光沢と艶
3.しなやかで粘り強い強靭さ
桜の皮は極めて優れた材料である。

Kabazaiku is a traditional Japanese craft using the bark of cherry trees. "Kaba" refers to the bark of the wild mountain cherry tree. Kabazaiku originated in Kakunodate, Akita Prefecture, and its techniques have been passed down since the Edo period. It is mainly used for tea caddies and small items. Soetsu Yanagi, a pioneer of the modern folk art movement, also commented that "it is unique to Japan because the bark of the Japanese cherry tree is used."

赤く光り出す桜皮 / Red Glowing Cherry Bark

我々は、これまで樺細工で用いられてきた桜皮の使用方法とは一線を画す桜皮の魅せ方を考察してきた。桜皮に含まれる桜皮の色素が光を捉えると赤く光り出す。これは、桜の木に含まれるアントシアニンという赤い色素が反応するためである。樺細工で用いられる薄く削り磨き上げる特殊な技術を応用し、桜の皮の別の魅力を引き出していく。光が加わることで、桜皮の色素が赤く光り出し、樹皮の美しい模様が浮び上がる。この素材を用いて、桜皮の照明をつくる。

We have been exploring ways to showcase cherry bark in a manner different from the traditional methods used in Kabazaiku. The pigment in cherry bark glows red when it catches light. This is because of a reaction caused by anthocyanin, a red pigment found in cherry trees. By applying the special technique of thinly shaving and polishing used in Kabazaiku, we bring out another charm of cherry bark. When light is captured, the pigment in the cherry bark glows bewitching red, revealing the beautiful patterns of the bark. We created a Cherry Bark Lamp using this special tree bark.

桜皮の透過性 / Transparency

桜の皮は、光を捉えると赤く光り出し、さらに透過性をもつ。

When cherry bark catches light, it glows red and becomes transparent.

桜皮の皮目 / Cherry Bark Lenticel

皮目とは、樹木が呼吸するための孔で、山桜は横長な皮目が特徴である。樺細工の独自の模様はこの皮目によるものである。自然物であるため、育った環境によって皮目の模様は異なり、それぞれに独自の美しさを醸し出す。光を捉えて、桜皮の色素が赤く光り出し、この皮目の模様が美しく浮び上がる。

Lenticels are pores that allow trees to breathe, and Japanese cherry trees are characterized by their elongated lenticels. The unique patterns of Kabazaiku are due to the texture of the bark. The pattern of the bark varies depending on the environment in which it grows naturally, and each one exudes its own unique beauty. When light is captured, the pigment in the cherry bark glows bewitching red, revealing the beautiful patterns of lenticels.

桜皮の仕上げ / Surface Finish

桜の皮の原皮は、灰褐色で表面がざらざらしており、その質感をそのまま用いたのが「 霜降皮 」と呼ばれる。 原皮の表面を削ると赤褐色の層が現れ、それを磨き上げて光沢が増したものを「 無地皮 」と呼ばれる。 桜の皮の仕上げによって、光を捉えた時の赤い色や透過率が変化し、それぞれに桜の皮の美しさを感じられる。

The raw bark of the cherry tree is grayish-brown with a rough surface, and the texture of the raw bark is used in what is called " frosted bark ". When the surface of the raw hide bark is scraped, a reddish-brown layer appears, and when this layer is polished to increase its luster, it is called " plain bark ". As the cherry bark is finished, the red color and transmittance change when it catches the light, allowing you to appreciate the unique beauty of each piece of cherry bark.

ペンダントランプ / Pendant Lamp

ペンダントランプは、幹に桜の皮がついている状態である横長の皮目のまま、幹を輪切りにしたようなデザインとして、桜の皮の美しさをシンプルに表現した。

The pendant lamp was designed to resemble a cross-section of a cherry tree trunk, with the bark still attached to the trunk.

テーブルランプ / Table Lamp

テーブルランプは、ペンダント同様円柱型のデザインと桜の皮で平たい面をつくり四角柱の行灯を制作した。

The table lamp was designed as a cylindrical design and a rectangular prism-shaped lantern.

フロアランプ / Floor Lamp

フロアランプは、巨大な四角柱の行灯を制作した。

The floor lamp was designed as a huge rectangular lantern.

経年変化による美しさ / Aging

桜の皮は、経年変化により光沢と艶が増し、深みのある赤褐色に変化することで、光を捉えると、より深い赤で光り出す。

As cherry bark ages, it gains luster and sheen, changing to a deep reddish-brown color, lighting up with deeper red.

持続可能性 / Sustainability

山桜の樹皮は、剥ぎ取っても数年後には再生する環境に優しい素材である。また、現在使用されている桜の皮に、山々を守るための「 更新 」といわれる伐採計画のある木の副産物も利用することで、森林資源を循環させていく。山からの頂き物で暮らし営み、そして山を守るという考えのもと、これからの持続可能性について検討していく。

The cherry bark is an environmentally friendly material that regenerates after a few years even if it is stripped off. Furthermore, by utilizing trees that are subject to logging plans known as "regeneration," which are intended to protect the mountains, we recycle the cherry bark of our forest resource. We live and work off the blessings of the mountains, protect them, and consider sustainability for the future.
